Not sure if you’re related? Take A Sibling DNA test.

What’s the purpose of a Sibling DNA test?

sibling-dna-test-info-testing-lab-nyc-01Sibling DNA tests are used to determine if two individuals are biologically related as siblings. The results can be used for personal information or legal information. Because Sibling DNA tests can be required for legal purposes (such as the inheritance of assets), this type of DNA test should be performed in an AABB-accredited laboratory, such as our lab. Courts and other legal entities will not accept DNA evidence as valid unless it is performed in an accredited lab.

Besides being used to determine if two people are biologically related as siblings, the test can also be used in parentage cases to help establish the paternity or maternity of a parent when that person is unable to have their DNA tested, either because they are deceased, unavailable, or unwilling to have their DNA tested.

It is also common for mother to seek a Sibling DNA test on behalf of her children to obtain Social Security survivor benefits for them. Sibling DNA tests can also be part of the immigration process as a DNA test requirement.

Sibling DNA tests can be used to determine if two individuals are full siblings, half siblings, or are unrelated to each other. Depending on the type of Sibling DNA test, we may also require DNA samples from the mother, father, and/or other undisputed siblings.

How does a Sibling DNA test work?

dna-test-for-sibling-relatioinships-new-york-top-lab-02When we perform a sibling DNA test, we usually collect buccal cells, or cheek cells, from inside a person’s cheek using a cheek swab made of cotton. We will need swab samples from both individuals to be tested.

Each person has a unique set of DNA. All of a person’s DNA put together is called a genome. When people are related, their genomes are more similar to each other than when they are not related. When we compare the genomes of multiple people, we are able to see how similar the genomes are. This comparison is called DNA profiling or Genetic Fingerprinting, and is the same process used in criminal investigations to see if someone’s fingerprint or hair matches the genome of the suspect. For a Sibling DNA test, we use this method to compare the two genomes to confirm if two people are biologically related as siblings.

What kind of results will I receive?

dna-testing-for-immigration-lab-nyc-01After we perform the Sibling DNA test, you will receive a percentage result. This percentage represents the probability that the two individuals are biologically related as siblings. If the probability is 0% then they are not related. If they are related, the probability may be as high as 99.99%. It is important to note that the accuracy of Sibling DNA tests is not always as high as that of paternity or maternity DNA tests due to more complex inheritance patterns. But the more genetic information we have available (aka, the more family members we are able to test), the more accurate the DNA test results will be.

In order to take a legal DNA test in the state of New York, you are required to get permission from a physician or legal entity, such as a court. At our lab we have a physician on the premises ready to make this referral for you, making this DNA testing process as easy and convenient as possible. We are the one-stop-shop for all of your DNA testing needs.

Contact us today to schedule a Sibling DNA test appointment, or any other type of DNA test, with the best DNA testing lab in NYC.

DNA Testing to Confirm Sibling Relationships

DNA Testing to Confirm Sibling Relationships

dna-test-confirm-sibling-relationships-nyc-nj-long-island-01Knowing you have a younger or older sibling can make a big difference to your life in many ways. However, there are plenty of people who are unsure as to whether they share the same father but are eager to find this information out. This sort of doubt can drive wedges between those that could actually be full siblings and this can affect their relationship on a long term basis as well as putting a lot of strain on other relationships and areas of their lives.

If you have doubts as to whether you and your sibling share the same father, a sibling DNA test could be the ideal solution. If the father is not present to provide a sample so that the DNA test can be carried out, this test can provide you with the answers you need. The results of the test can show you whether the two of you share just one parent or both parents.

Get your sibling DNA test from experts

expert-dna-testing-for-family-relationships-02It can be very distressing for two people to be unsure as to whether they are full siblings or not. Fortunately, in today’s high tech world, sibling DNA testing can be carried out to determine whether the two of you have just one parent the same or both. If you want to arrange a sibling DNA test, it is important to turn to the experts. Make sure you find a provider that offers the following benefits:

  • Plenty of experience with sibling DNA tests: You should look for a provider that has plenty of experience when it comes to carrying out sibling DNA tests. Finding professionals with a high level of expertise with this specific type of DNA testing will enable you to benefit from greater reassurance and peace of mind.
  • Can provide results with speed and accuracy: When you are waiting to find out whether you have a full sibling or not, the last thing you want is to be kept waiting around and facing delays. Make sure you choose a provider that can give you the results of the test with speed and accuracy.

You should also make sure you look at consumer reviews of the facility online so you can get a better idea about the reputation and service levels offered. Also, check on the cost of the tests, as this can vary from provider to provider.

More Than Two Types of Twins: DNA Testing for Twins

People may wonder why twins need to have DNA testing. After all, they usually look alike, so why the DNA test. But the fact is that there are more than two types of twins. As a result, DNA testing for twins is needed to determine a genetic connection between each twin and their parents.

Identical Twins

DNA TwinsIdentical twins occur when a single fertilized egg splits within the first few days after it’s fertilized. Each half of the embryo will form into a genetically identical individual. The two twins each contain the same DNA sequences and are therefore genetically identical. Identical twins make up about 30% of twins.

Non-identical Twins

Non-identical or fraternal twins are created by two separate eggs and two separate sperm. These types of twins share half their genetic information and are basically normal siblings. Two separate eggs are created, each with their own genetic identity. Fraternal twins develop together in the womb and are born at the same time. It is also possible for non-identical twins to have different fathers.

Semi-identical Twins

Semi-identical Twins occurs when two different eggs in the mother’s womb that are fertilized by two different sperm. Two sperm fertilize a single egg. Fortunately this embryo is divided, as a normal embryo could not survive with the extra DNA. Each new semi-identical twin has the correct amount of DNA for survival. Each semi-identical twin has the same maternal DNA, but different paternal DNA.

Where Can You Get DNA Testing for Twins?

A DNA test for twins is easy and painless. It can even be performed on a newborn. A DNA tech will collect a DNA sample by swabbing a small sample of the inside of each person’s cheek. After collection, the sample is submitted to a DNA testing lab and/or DNA testing doctor.

DNA Testing for Twins can be performed at DNA testing centers. It is important to make sure that you choose a testing center that will provide confidentiality of information and of the DNA samples you provide.

When you are ready for DNA Testing for Twins, please call us at 718-701-0292 to schedule an appointment with the top DNA testing center in NYC.

DNA Siblingship Test NYC

BestDNATestingNYC1Have you ever heard of a siblingship DNA test?

In case you aren’t entirely certain what siblingship means, it is referring to your brothers and sisters. This might also include your half brothers or half sisters.

Although DNA tests to prove or disprove paternity are what you probably hear about the most, siblingship DNA testing can be extremely useful in certain situations.

What exactly does a siblingship DNA test establish?BestDNATestingNYC3

What Does a DNA Siblingship Test Prove?

In a nutshell, this type of testing proves whether or not two or more persons are related to each other by blood as sisters or brothers. This may also apply to half brothers or half sisters.

If there is a genetic match shown by a DNA sample that shows you or another person are a brother or sister to each other, you may have the same parents or share a mother or father.

Why would someone want to have a siblingship DNA test?

BestDNATestingNYC2Reasons for Siblingship DNA Testing

One of the most common reasons for a DNA test to determine whether or not two people are siblings is when a paternity DNA test isn’t possible and the only way to know paternity is to test a suspected father’s children to see if they are all related to each other by blood.

If two people have the same set of parents—both mother and father—they will almost certainly share half of their mother’s chromosomes and half of their father’s. In this scenario, these two people would be full siblings.

By the same token, if two people are only half brother or sisters, one fourth of their chromosomes should be identical. When testing for siblingship, the number of genes that are shared as well as the pattern in which those genes are shared are carefully analyzed and a “sibship” index calculated.

If this index shows less than 1.00, this is an indication that the people are not related. If the index shows more than 1.00, this is a strong indication that the persons being tested are either full siblings or half siblings.
