DNA Testing for Down Syndrome: Non-invasive Testing

Most of the time, Down syndrome isn’t inherited. It’s caused by an error in cell division during the development of the egg, sperm or embryo. This results in extra genetic material from chromosome 21, which is responsible for the characteristic features and developmental problems of Down syndrome.
Three genetic variations can cause Down syndrome:

  • Trisomy 21. About 95 percent of the time, Down syndrome is caused by trisomy 21. Three copies of chromosome 21 (instead of two) are present in all cells.
  • Translocation Down syndrome. Down syndrome can also occur when part of chromosome 21 becomes attached onto another chromosome at conception.
  • Mosaic Down syndrome. In this rare (and milder form) of Down syndrome children have an extra copy of chromosome 21 in some cells.

How is DNA Testing For Down Syndrome Performed?

A blood sample is taken from the mother and submitted to a DNA testing lab. In a specialized DNA testing lab, the DNA is isolated from the maternal blood sample which contains a mixture of about 90% maternal and 10% fetal DNA. It is analyzed to check for an increased amount of genes present from a specific chromosome.

Who needs DNA Testing For Down Syndrome?

The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that the test be offered only to women at high risk of having children with aneuploidies (“aneuploidies” refers to the chromosome number being different from the usual number), including women ages 35 and over, those with abnormal ultrasound results or women who have given birth to children with Down syndrome.

It is important to note that DNA test for Down syndrome is a screening test that can help avoid invasive tests, but the results may still need to be confirmed with amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling by a DNA doctor.

Where Can You Get DNA Testing for Down Syndrome?

Testing for Down syndrome can be performed at DNA testing centers. It is important to make sure that you choose a testing center that will provide confidentiality of information and of the DNA samples you provide.

When you are ready for DNA testing for a Down syndrome, please call us at 718-701-0292 to schedule an appointment with the top DNA testing center in NYC.

What is Avuncular DNA Testing?

Avuncular DNA testing

Has it been suggested or recommended that you might want to undergo avuncular DNA testing and you aren’t exactly sure what it is?

DNA avuncular testing is not as common as DNA paternity testing, but there are times when it is advisable or simply desirable to have it done.

Also known as an aunt/uncle test, this DNA testing will determine whether or not someone is a biological niece or nephew of another person. DNA genetic testing is used to make this determination, similar to maternity or paternity DNA testing.

Why would this sort of DNA testing be performed?

Reasons for Avuncular DNA Testing

The most usual reason for a DNA test to find out whether a person is the biological aunt or uncle of someone is in cases where the father is missing or unavailable for paternity testing.

Siblings, brothers and sisters, all share a certain percentage of genetic chromosomes. So, in the absence of the father to submit a DNA specimen, siblings of the suspected father can be compared to a particular person to check for common genetic makeup.

Unlike a paternity DNA test with a conclusive 99.99% result, an avuncular test uses an index based on the genetic material of each person. If the index is less than 1.00, this is an indicator that there is no blood relation between the two parties. More than 1.00 indicates a biological relationship and the higher the index, the stronger that probability.

There are legal as well as non-legal avuncular DNA tests.

Legal or Non-Legal Avuncular DNA Testing?

A legal avuncular DNA test requires a chain of custody in which every step of the process is documented. All participants are photographed. Adults must show a valid government ID. Minors must have an adult with them and proof of identity such as a birth certificate, passport, Social Security card or record of birth.

A legal DNA test of this sort might be needed in cases of an inheritance or to claim Social Security benefits, child support and other benefits.

If you merely want to establish a biological relation to see whether or not someone is your aunt or uncle or vice versa; to find out if you are someone’s aunt or uncle; a private, non-legal avuncular DNA test should suffice.

If you need legal or non-legal Avuncular DNA testing, contact us today to schedule an appointment with New York City’s leading DNA testing service.
