There are many different DNA testing companies in New York, and it can be difficult to determine which one is the best for your needs. The kind of DNA testing company you should use depends mainly on what you will need the DNA test for. If you only need a DNA test for personal use, then you won’t necessarily need to work with a company that provides DNA tests. Legal DNA tests are slightly more expensive than those for personal use, but they are admissible in court for purposes ranging from determining paternity for child custody and other reasons to proving relationship status for immigration proceedings. But regardless of what your DNA test is being used for, there are a number of requirements that New York State regulations mandate.
Accreditation and other requirements
In New York State, all DNA tests have to be performed by a testing laboratory that has been accredited by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH). In addition, DNA tests can only be performed at the request of an authorizing agent. Authorizing agents may be a doctor or a lawyer. Additionally, you should try to only work with DNA testing laboratories that are accredited by the AABB.
Furthermore, the collection of the DNA sample is required to be witnessed by a third party who has no personal relationship with the person being tested or interest in the outcome of the test (called a “collector.”) The collector can be a doctor, lawyer, or employee of a DNA testing center. This process is essentially the same for personal and court-ordered DNA tests.
DNA testing at AABB
AABB is the most reliable and trusted DNA testing center in New York. We are fully accredited by the NYSDOH and have ten years of experience providing outstanding results for paternity, immigration, and personal DNA tests. An important question when you are considering a DNA test is whether you can afford the services of a high quality laboratory. There are plenty of laboratories that advertise “affordable” DNA tests for paternity, immigration, and other uses. And the range of prices is very broad – from less than a hundred dollars to more than $1500 – which can be confusing. Generally, however, you should be able to get a quality DNA test for between $200 and $500, depending on what services are required and whether the results will be used for legal reasons.
While modern medicine has made a DNA test a fairly simple procedure, there are still a number of factors that can affect both the accuracy of the test and what the results can be used for. These are the main things to think about when looking at the cost of a DNA test.
DNA testing is very sensitive, which means it requires that laboratory technicians carefully follow a precise chain of steps in order to make sure the correct result is accurately reported. The laboratory should be using state of the art equipment and have an accredited, trained scientist verifying the results. Additionally, the lab itself should be accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks and the New York State Department of Health.
What the results of the DNA test will be used for is the next thing to consider when looking at the cost of the test. The DNA test may be used to prove paternity for child support and custody, for inheritance, and for other reasons. Legal paternity tests document the entire testing process and chain of custody, from the collection of the DNA sample by a trained professional to the reporting of results. This type of test is more expensive, but is admissible in court if you will need to prove paternity now or in the future.
If the results are only required for personal knowledge, and not to be used for legal reasons, you can collect samples yourself using a home paternity test. These tests are less expensive than legal paternity tests, but cannot be accepted by a court.
Finally, if a laboratory’s DNA testing prices sound too inexpensive to be accurate, then they probably are. It’s important to make sure you are going with a trusted laboratory that is accredited and can provide results you know to be accurate.
