Has it been suggested or recommended that you might want to undergo avuncular DNA testing and you aren’t exactly sure what it is?
DNA avuncular testing is not as common as DNA paternity testing, but there are times when it is advisable or simply desirable to have it done.
Also known as an aunt/uncle test, this DNA testing will determine whether or not someone is a biological niece or nephew of another person. DNA genetic testing is used to make this determination, similar to maternity or paternity DNA testing.
Why would this sort of DNA testing be performed?
The most usual reason for a DNA test to find out whether a person is the biological aunt or uncle of someone is in cases where the father is missing or unavailable for paternity testing.
Siblings, brothers and sisters, all share a certain percentage of genetic chromosomes. So, in the absence of the father to submit a DNA specimen, siblings of the suspected father can be compared to a particular person to check for common genetic makeup.
Unlike a paternity DNA test with a conclusive 99.99% result, an avuncular test uses an index based on the genetic material of each person. If the index is less than 1.00, this is an indicator that there is no blood relation between the two parties. More than 1.00 indicates a biological relationship and the higher the index, the stronger that probability.
There are legal as well as non-legal avuncular DNA tests.
A legal avuncular DNA test requires a chain of custody in which every step of the process is documented. All participants are photographed. Adults must show a valid government ID. Minors must have an adult with them and proof of identity such as a birth certificate, passport, Social Security card or record of birth.
A legal DNA test of this sort might be needed in cases of an inheritance or to claim Social Security benefits, child support and other benefits.
If you merely want to establish a biological relation to see whether or not someone is your aunt or uncle or vice versa; to find out if you are someone’s aunt or uncle; a private, non-legal avuncular DNA test should suffice.
