How Is DNA Testing Performed?

How the Process Works

There are two main options available to you. One is an at home test. These are simple to use kits that allow you to submit information to a DNA testing center. They are best for situations where you want basic information and you do not plan to use the information for any legal matter. The second option is visiting a DNA testing center directly. This ensures that the test is done properly and that the identifications of each person are identified prior to the test. This type of DNA test is legally admissible.
In either case, the process is very straightforward. You’ll have a technician use a cotton swab, much like a q-tip swiped on the inside of your cheek. This process helps to pick up cells that are commonly located in this area. This test is not invasive. It does not require any type of blood work to be completed. Once the swab is taken from your mouth, it is stored in a productive container. It is then sent to the lab for processing. The lab will process the information by gathering the cells from the swab and comparing them to the other swabs from other people in your family.

A comparison reveals just how much DNA is shared. DNA, which is like an instruction manual as to your makeup, is 99.9 percent the same for all humans. However, it is in that .01 percent that the differences lie. That information is compared to determine how much it is similar. Then, a decision can be made as to the relationship between the two people.
